Donor impurities play a pivotal role in semiconductor technology. These impurities are atoms that have more valence electrons than the semiconductor atoms they are introduced to. For instance, phosphorus has five valence electrons, whereas silicon, a common semiconductor material, has four. When phosphorus is used as a donor impurity in silicon, it introduces an additional electron into the semiconductor.

Once added to the semiconductor lattice, this additional electron is only loosely bound to the phosphorus atom and can be easily excited to the conduction band with minimal energy, such as thermal energy at room temperature. This is in stark contrast to the energy required for an electron to jump from the valence band to the conduction band in pure semiconductors, a process called intrinsic excitation, which requires significantly more energy, typically in the form of heat or light.

Whereas donor impurities donate electrons, acceptor impurities work by accepting electrons. These impurities have one less valence electron than the atoms of the host semiconductor. Boron, for example, has three valence electrons and when added to silicon, it creates a deficiency by accepting an electron from a neighboring silicon atom.

When an electron from the host lattice fills the void left by the acceptor impurity, a 'hole' is created in the valence band; this is because an electron leaves a vacant state, which can move through the lattice as neighboring electrons fill the gap. This movement contributes to electrical conductivity. Similar to donor impurities, the process of creating holes by acceptor impurities is more efficient than waiting for a valence band-conduction band excitation to produce a hole, thereby giving rise to an increased number of holes even at lower energy inputs like room temperature.

The concept of valence band-conduction band excitation is foundational to understanding how semiconductors behave. In simplified terms, electrons in a semiconductor occupy energy states in the valence band under normal conditions. When these electrons gain enough energy from an external source like heat or light, they can be excited and leap to the conduction band, an upper level of energy where they can freely move and conduct electricity.

Intrinsic excitation, however, is less efficient than impurity-driven conductivity because it requires higher energy to move electrons from the valence band to the conduction band. This means that at lower temperatures, significantly fewer electrons are able to make this leap, leading to lower conductivity in the semiconductor material.

The generation of free electrons is essential for the conduction of electricity in semiconductors. In the world of semiconductors, 'free' refers to the electrons' ability to move through the lattice structure of the material, creating an electric current. Donor impurities greatly enhance this process by providing electrons that require relatively little energy to become free compared to the energy needed for intrinsic excitations.

These free electrons result from donor atoms with extra valence electrons that become part of the conduction band upon the impurity's introduction to the semiconductor lattice. As a result, the concentration of free electrons increases, and so does the electrical conductivity of the material, making it an n-type semiconductor (negative-type due to the negatively charged free electrons).

Holes are as important to semiconductor operation as free electrons. A hole is essentially the absence of an electron in the valence band; it behaves as a positive charge carrier because it seeks to be filled by an electron. Acceptor impurities boost hole creation by taking an electron from the valence band, which leaves behind a positive charge that facilitates conducting electricity.

The fascinating aspect of holes is that they move in the direction opposite to electrons but contribute to current flow just the same. In the presence of acceptor impurities, the semiconductor material becomes p-type (positive-type) due to the positive charge carriers. These holes represent the majority carriers in a p-type semiconductor and are generated even at lower temperatures, where intrinsic processes might not be sufficient to produce a significant number of holes.
