Briefly explain what determines the characteristic color of (a) a metal and (b) a transparent nonmetal.

The dazzling array of colors we see in various materials originates from the complex interaction of light with electrons. When light strikes a material, its photons interact with the electrons present in the material's atoms and molecules. This interaction can result in the absorption of light at certain energies, which corresponds to specific wavelengths or colors.

For instance, when a photon with the right energy hits an electron, it can excite that electron to a higher energy level. However, not all colors of light have the same energy. Violet light, for example, has more energy than red light. Therefore, if an electron requires a specific amount of energy to jump to a higher level, it will selectively absorb light of that color. After absorbing energy, electrons don’t stay excited forever; they eventually release energy in the form of light and return to their initial state. This emission can also contribute to the color we see. Through absorption and emission, electrons essentially 'select' which wavelengths of light are reflected or transmitted, thus giving materials their characteristic colors.

Metals are coveted for their gleaming surfaces, capable of reflecting light like a mirror. The reflective properties of metals are deeply rooted in the behavior of free electrons present in their structure. Unlike insulators, metals have what’s called a 'conduction band' where electrons are relatively free to move. These free electrons are rather social; when light (which is an electromagnetic wave) hits a metal’s surface, they readily absorb and re-emit photons.

Optical Conductivity

What’s intriguing is the high optical conductivity in metals, allowing these free electrons to oscillate at the same frequency as the incoming light wave. When these oscillating electrons re-emit light, they do so in a manner that yields high reflectivity, especially for lower energy wavelengths, resulting in the shiny, metallic look.

Color Reflections

Even though metals are excellent reflectors, the specific surface structure and electron interactions can lead to selective absorption of certain wavelengths, which may impart a subtle color to the reflected light.

The world of nonmetals contrasts starkly with metals when it comes to light interaction. The color that we perceive from a nonmetallic material is largely due to electronic transitions among the material’s discrete energy states. Unlike the free electrons in metals, the electrons in nonmetals are usually bound within distinct energy levels, which means they require very specific energies to jump from one level to another.

When a nonmetal absorbs part of the visible spectrum, the remaining light is transmitted or reflected, and this light's spectrum dictates the color we observe. Think of it as a selective filter; a transparent nonmetal might absorb blue light but transmit red and green, leading to a material that appears yellow. This selection process hinges on the ‘energy gap’ or the difference in energy between the accessible states of the electrons. Essentially, because of these energy gaps, nonmetals can exhibit a plethora of colors based on the light they absorb and transmit.

When we peer through colored glass and wonder at its hue, what we’re actually observing is the outcome of absorption and transmission of light. This process is central to the coloration of transparent materials. Absorption occurs when certain wavelengths of light are captured by the material, engaging the electrons in a state of excitement. The energy from that light is effectively removed from the visible spectrum.

Transmission

The flip side of absorption is transmission, which is when light passes through a medium without being absorbed. If a material is transparent or translucent, the wavelengths that are not absorbed are transmitted through the material, potentially leading to the phenomenon of light appearing with a particular color as it emerges.

Filters and Colors

If a material absorbs green light but transmits red and blue, we see the emergent light as magenta. This selective process allows transparent materials not only to demonstrate vivid colors but also to act as filters which can block out certain parts of the spectrum while letting others pass. The delicate balance between absorption and transmission defines the ultimate color we perceive in various materials.
