Electronic polarization is the phenomenon that occurs when an external electric field, such as electromagnetic radiation, interacts with a material containing polarizable charges like electrons. The electric field of the radiation induces an electron redistribution within the material, causing a shift in the electron cloud around the atoms or molecules. This shift induces a temporary dipole moment in the atomic and molecular structures, resulting in the material becoming polarized.

Electronic polarization has significant effects on the interaction of light with transparent materials. Here are two consequences of this phenomenon: 1.- Refractive index: The electronic polarization affects the speed of light as it passes through the material, altering its refractive index. When light propagates through a medium, electronic polarization causes the light wave to interact with the polarized atoms and molecules, resulting in a decreased velocity of light in the material. The refractive index of the material depends on the degree of electronic polarization and the frequency of the incoming light. 2.- Dispersion: Another consequence of electronic polarization in transparent materials is dispersion, which is the dependence of the refractive index on the wavelength (or frequency) of light. As different wavelengths of light cause varying degrees of polarization in the material, the refractive index varies accordingly. This causes the light of different colors to travel at different speeds within the material, leading to the phenomenon known as dispersion (e.g., the separation of white light into its constituent colors as it passes through a prism).
