Chapter 37: 11 - Excercises And Problems (page 1082)

An oil droplet with 15excess electrons is observed between two parallel electrodes spaced 12mm apart. The droplet hangs motionless if the upper electrode is25V more positive than the lower electrode. The density of the oil is 860kg/m3. What is the radius of the droplet?

Short Answer

Expert verified

Radius of oil droplet is 0.1123 m

Step by step solution

01

 Given information

We need to find out the radius of oil droplet placed between two parallel electrodes .

02

Detailed solution

Number of excess electrons; n=15

Separation between electrode; l=12mm=12×10-3m

The droplet hangs motionless if the upper electrode potential; V=

The density of the oil ;d =860Kg/m3

The electric force is balanced by the mass of the object. So,

F=mg=qEq=mglV.....(1);{E=Vl}

Also , charges come in integral multiples of electronic units ;

q = ne .....(2)

Now, equate (1) & (2)

ne=mglV.....(3) ,density ;d= mass/ volume

{ d = m/ vol.}

m= d ×vol. = d×43πr3......(4)

Putting (4) in (3) ,

d×43×πr3×glV=860×43×πr3×9.8×12×10-325r=15×1.6×10-19×25×34×860×3.14×9.8×12×10-33

0.1123m

Thus, the radius of oil droplet is0.1123m

A cosmic ray travels 60kmthrough the earth’s atmosphere in400ms, as measured by experimenters on the ground. How long does the journey take according to the cosmic ray?

Your friend flies from Los Angeles to New York. She carries an accurate stopwatch with her to measure the flight time. You and your assistants on the ground also measure the flight time.

a. Identify the two events associated with this measurement.

b. Who, if anyone, measures the proper time?

c. Who, if anyone, measures the shorter flight time?

An electron in a cathode-ray beam passes between 2.5cm-long parallel-plate electrodes that are 5.0mm apart. A 2.0mT, 2.5-cm-wide magnetic field is perpendicular to the electric field between the plates. The electron passes through the electrodes without being deflected if the potential difference between the plates is 600V.

a. What is the electron’s speed?

b. If the potential difference between the plates is set to zero, what is the electron’s radius of curvature in the magnetic field?

Express in eV(or keVor MeVif more appropriate):

a. The kinetic energy of an electron moving with a speed of 5.0×106m/s.

b. The potential energy of an electron and a proton 0.10nmapart.

c. The kinetic energy of a proton that has accelerated from rest through a potential difference of 5000V.
