The combustion process is a chemical reaction that happens when a substance combines with an oxidizer, such as oxygen, to release energy in the form of heat and light. In simpler terms, it's what we see when something burns.

For combustion to occur, three elements must be present: fuel, oxygen, and a source of heat. This is often referred to as the 'fire triangle'. Fuel can be a solid, liquid, or gas that is capable of being ignited. This process generates products such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, heat, and sometimes light, which we see as flames.

In Earth's habitat, typical fuels include wood, coal, or gasoline and the oxidizer is oxygen from the air. A match or a spark provides the initial heat needed to start the combustion. Once started, if there is enough fuel and oxygen, the combustion process can become self-sustaining until the removal of one element of the fire triangle, which extinguishes the flame.

Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, is enshrouded in a thick atmosphere that is quite different from Earth's atmosphere. Based on the data collected by the space missions, Titan's atmosphere is predominantly composed of nitrogen (approximately 97%), similar to Earth's, but it lacks a significant concentration of oxygen.

Other components making up Titan's atmosphere include methane (approximately 2.7%) and trace amounts of other hydrocarbons like ethane and acetylene. These hydrocarbons in Titan's atmosphere are the result of the breakdown of methane by sunlight and possibly by Titan's seasonal weather patterns. Despite the prevalence of these hydrocarbons, Titan remains devoid of rampant combustion because of the crucial absence of an abundant oxidizer like oxygen.

Oxygen plays a pivotal role in the combustion process. It is the most common oxidizer and is abundantly available in Earth's atmosphere, making up about 21% of its composition.

When a fuel burns in the presence of oxygen, it undergoes a chemical reaction where the fuel molecules are broken down and combine with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other combustion products, releasing energy.

Without a sufficient supply of oxygen, as is the case on Titan, there can be no combustion, even if there are flammable gases present. This is the reason why materials that would normally ignite and burn on Earth, like methane and acetylene, do not catch fire in Titan's atmosphere. The lack of oxygen effectively removes one side of the fire triangle, preventing the initiation of the combustion process.
