Unlike all other types of telescopes, neutrino detectors are placed deep underground. Why?

Given the stealth-like properties of neutrinos and the disruptive interference from cosmic rays, scientists have found an ingenious solution: take the quest underground—way underground. By burying neutrino detectors deep beneath the Earth's surface, they exploit the planet's natural ability to shield these sensitive instruments from noisy cosmic rays.

The deeper the detector, the better the protection, as the overlying rock and soil absorb the bulk of unwanted particles. Only neutrinos, with their ghostly ability to pass through matter almost unscathed, persist in their journey and can reach the subterranean detectors. Locations like abandoned mines or under mountains are often chosen for these neutrino observatories because of their added shielding effect.

Underground particle detection is a formidable engineering feat. It's not just about digging a hole and placing a detector; the environment has to be carefully controlled to prevent other forms of background noise, such as radiation from the surrounding rock or thermal noise, from affecting the instruments. This setting provides the silent stage needed to detect the faint murmur of neutrinos and listen to the secrets they carry about the universe.
