During their 'Main Sequence' phase, stars fuse hydrogen in their cores to form helium. When the hydrogen is depleted, the star's core contracts and heats up, leading to the next stages of its lifecycle. For stars similar in mass to our Sun, they expand into Red Giants before shedding their outer layers to form a planetary nebula, leaving behind a white dwarf. Red Giants represent a late stage in the life cycle of a star. These stars are engaged in the process of converting hydrogen to helium through nuclear fusion in their cores, which is a stable phase accounting for about 90% of a star's lifetime.
