When dealing with waves, such as light waves in diffraction, a phasor diagram offers a visual way to represent the complex oscillations and interfering patterns. Imagine light waves passing through a single slit; these waves spread out and overlap, producing a pattern of bright and dark bands known as a diffraction pattern. The phasor diagram helps us visualize the contribution of each part of the slit to the final intensity pattern on a screen.

Think of each point on the slit as emitting a small wavelet; these wavelets then combine at different points on a screen to create the observed pattern. The phasor diagram shows these contributions as vectors, with each vector's length representing the amplitude of the wavelet and the angle indicating its phase relative to a reference point. Here, the challenge is to understand that intensity isn't linear; small changes in amplitude can lead to significant changes in intensity due to the squaring of the amplitude. This concept helps to explain why the brightness of the maxima diminishes so rapidly as one moves away from the center of the pattern.

Bessel functions are a series of solutions to a certain type of differential equation that appears in various areas of physics and engineering. In optics, specifically the study of diffraction patterns, Bessel functions come into play when we're working with circular or cylindrical symmetry.
