A hologram is made using 600-nm light and then viewed by using white light from an incandescent bulb. What will be seen? Explain.

Short Answer

Expert verified

The image will be clear for some angles and distorted and blurry for others.

Step by step solution

01

Given Data

Using interference effects, we can record and reproduce three-dimensional images. This phenomenon is known as Holography. To make a hologram two things are required: a cohered light source, and extreme mechanical stability.

02

Hologram by bulb light

The radius of the mth concentric fringe of each hologram is given by

rm=2mλb0

Where, λ = wavelength of the light used to construct the hologram.

As we know a bulb emits a range of wavelengths due to which the image produced by the hologram will be distorted. Apart from that, the visible spectrum produced by a bulb also contains light of the wavelength which will contribute towards making the perfect image of hologram due to which ultimately a distorted and blurry image will form for some angles.

Therefore, A distorted and blurry image will form for some angles.

Light scattered from the blue sky is strongly polarized because of the nature of the scattering process described in Section 33.6. But light scattered from white clouds is usually not polarized. Why not?

Two small stereo speakers A and B that are 1.40 m apart are sending out sound of wavelength 34 cm in all directions and all in phase. A person at point P starts out equidistant from both speakers and walks so that he is always 1.50 m from speaker B (Fig. E35.1). For what values of x will the sound this person hears be (a) maximally reinforced, (b) cancelled? Limit your solution to the cases where x 1.50 m.

You may have noticed a small convex mirror next to your bank’s ATM. Why is this mirror convex, as opposed to flat or concave? What considerations determine its radius of curvature?

If you sit on the beach and look at the ocean through Polaroid sunglasses, the glasses help to reduce the glare from sunlight reflecting off the water. But if you lie on your side on the beach, there is little reduction in the glare. Explain why there is a difference.

Light of wavelength λand frequency v passes through a single slit of width a. The diffraction pattern is observed on a screen a distance x from the slit. Which of the following will decrease the width of the central maximum? (a) Decrease the slit width; (b) decrease the frequency v of the light; (c) decrease the wavelength λof the light; (d) decrease the distance of the screen from the slit. In each case justify your answer.
